According to an International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) article, “[T]he juvenile interview and interrogation landscape has undergone an unprecedented upheaval in the last decade as numerous studies have demonstrated that juveniles are particularly likely to give false information – and even falsely confess – when questioned by law enforcement. Based on this research, court decisions, all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, are leading police to question juveniles differently than adults.” In this workshop, you will learn how to get to the truth when interviewing juveniles.

Upon successful completion, you should be able to:

1.        Determine how culture and stages of development influence your approach

2.       Understand constitutional limitations and requirements regarding juvenile interviews

3.        Establish a level of rapport with juveniles

4.       Create a questioning plan with suitable queries and elicitation techniques

5.       Employ culturally-sensitive practices

6.       Reduce the chance of distress from the interview
